Ion chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography systems

At CCEIC, we have identified a benefit in relying less on external providers for analytical services where possible. As such we have been expanding our in house analytical capabilities in order to better complement our corrosion work.

As part of this expansion we currently have two Thermo Fisher Scientific Dionex ICS-2000 ion chromatography (IC) units connected together as a single system. One has an anion column which enables us to test for monoethylene glycol degradation products such as acetate, formate, glycolate etc. The other IC unit has a cation column enabling us to test for brine salts (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) and MDEA.

We also have a Thermo Fisher Scientific UltiMate 3000 high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system which has both a standard UV detector as well as a charged aerosol detector (CAD). This system allows us to track the concentration trends of film forming corrosion inhibitors throughout test systems.

These instruments have been crucial in the operation of the Monoethylene Glycol Benchtop Facility, and their use is being expanded into other projects within the centre.
